What Are You Gonna Do?

November 6th, 2009

I recently extended the challenge to our church members to go “DO Something.” In 2 Timothy 3:16-17, we are reminded that, “All Scripture is God-breathed… so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” God uses His Word to give us all the tools we need in order to “Do Something.” This concept not only applies in our church but in the communities beyond the walls of our church. More than ever, there are urgent needs all around us that together, as one body, we can help meet. It isn’t enough that we study God’s Word; we must also apply it. God has prepared us and now it is time to get out there and “Do Something.”

We, The Rock Church, have committed to completing 600,000 volunteer hours in 2009. From that total, we have set aside 100,000 hours to meet the needs that the Mayor of San Diego, Jerry Sanders, has identified. When Mayor Sanders’ Director of Protocol, Lisa Gordon, presented a proclamation to our church, March 8, 2009 officially became, “Do Something Day” for the entire city. I am proud to report that as a congregation, we are living up to the challenge. With two months left in the year and 490,000 hours logged as I write this, we are right on schedule. Better yet, we had completed 102,000 hours for the mayor by the end of September. That is only 9 months.

What does this mean? For the city, it translates into over $1.6 million dollars saved. It means projects are being completed that would have otherwise gone unfinished. It also signifies new relationships, friendships, and opportunities that allowed Christ to be represented in our city. For the individual; purpose! We have thousands of volunteers who have contributed to these “Do Something” hours. From a major league All-Star, to former prison inmates, to former drug addicts; many donated their time and energy to something as positive as community service. By making San Diego a better place, many learned something about themselves that God could not wait to reveal.

These incredible projects would not have been possible without fearless leaders and on October 29, we thanked them formally with an appreciation dinner. Not only are these leaders responsible for helping those outside of church, but also for the training of future leaders and volunteers, equipping them to go out from the church and “Do Something” in their communities. Our special guest on hand to applaud those leaders was professional baseball player, Adrian Gonzalez of the San Diego Padres.

To “Do Something” requires all of us to develop our character through either group or one-on-one ministries. Only then can we go out and make a positive impact on all of our communities.
